Information about cookies used on the website

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites leave on your device when you visit them. Your web browser processes them and stores them either temporarily (they are deleted after you exit the browser) or permanently (they remain on your device after you exit the browser).

What can cookies be used for?

Cookies are most often used to help websites work or be more efficient, as well as to provide information to site owners.
Cookies allow a website to recognize whether users have already visited it or help it understand user preferences. Cookies provide information about which parts of a website are most popular by showing which pages users visit and how much time they spend on them. By studying this information, websites can adapt to users' needs and provide an even more diverse user experience. In addition, cookies are used to ensure that the information displayed meets the user's expectations on each subsequent visit (without them being selected by you personally).

Types of cookies

There are generally three different ways to classify cookies: according to how long they are kept, their origin, and their purpose.

Duration

  • Temporary cookies – These cookies are short-lived and are deleted when you close your browser (or after the end of your session).

  • Persistent cookies – This category includes all cookies that remain on your device until you delete them or until your browser does so, depending on the cookie's expiration date (e.g. language settings, username and password, or cookie settings), so that you do not have to select them again on each subsequent visit.

Origin

  • First-party cookies – These cookies are placed directly on your device by the website you are visiting. Only that website can read them.

  • Third-party cookies – these are cookies that are not placed on your device by the website you are visiting, but by a third party such as an advertiser or analytics service (e.g. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Google Analytics).

Purpose

  • Required cookies – These cookies are essential for you to browse the website and use its basic features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Since these cookies are essential for the website to function, website owners they do not have to obtain consent from the user to place necessary cookies on their devices.

  • Preference cookies – These cookies, also known as “functional cookies”, allow the website to remember choices you have made in the past, for example which language you prefer, which region you want to receive weather forecasts for, or what your username and password are so that you can log in automatically.

  • Statistical cookies – Also known as “performance cookies”, these cookies collect information about how you use the website, such as the pages you have visited and the links you have clicked on. None of this data can be used to identify you. All such data is aggregated and, therefore, anonymised. Their sole purpose is to improve the website’s functionality. This includes cookies from third-party analytics services, as long as the cookies are for the sole use of the owner of the website being visited.

  • Marketing cookies – These cookies track your online activity to help advertisers deliver more relevant advertising or limit the number of times you see an ad. These cookies may share this information with other organizations or advertisers.
